On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand and Brant County Detachments; OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit; OPP Emergency Response Team and York Regional Police Aviation Services were called to assist the Six Nations Police Service after reports of its officers under weapons-fire on Chiefswood Road between 5th line and 6th line just outside Ohsweken.
A barricaded man continued to discharge a firearm at police officers throughout the night which created a stand off between the police officers and the barricaded man. In the morning at 6:31am, there was an announcement made via Haldimand County Police Facebook page stating there that there had been an active weapon complaint and the OPP were giving assistance to the Six Nations Police.
Chiefswood Road between 5th line and 6th line were shut down and residents in that area were advised to stay in their homes. The incident was resolved shortly before 9:30 am and the barricaded man, whom police have not named, was taken into custody and to the hospital.
As a result of this interaction, the OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPP or Six Nations Police will not be able to provide further information. Any other inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.
