Six Nations of the Grand River News & Media publishing
Welcome to Beyond Pryde located in Ohsweken, Ontario on Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, the largest Indian reservation in so-called Canada. Beyond Pryde is where the pursuit of truth and reconciliation is at the heart of everything we do.
Founded in 2020 during a time of social distancing, a demand for change and to find what we truly have believe in “Pryde” was formed. Beyond Pryde is our organization that is a passionate call to action for the betterment of Indigenous peoples on turtle island in hopes we all can find our sense of truth and reconciliation through “Pryde”.
Our Mandate
In news it is said that the media only focuses on what is “newsworthy” which is “impact, proximity, timeliness, prominence, conflict, human interest and a novelty oddity.” However, when it comes to Indigenous issues, Indigenous people are rarely positioned in mainstream media as experts or commentators on major issues of public interest.
“The fundamental nature of news and news reporting depends on bad news to garner ratings, which means that tragedies, conflicts and crises get reported and success stories rarely do. With this in mind, it is easy to understand why a non-Indigenous audience might come to the conclusion that Indigenous people are a troubled, plagued and contentious people” (Indigenous, n.d.).
Beyond Pryde’s purpose is to bring clarity, authenticity, accuracy, and transparency forth in news and storytelling through an Indigenous lens as there is a need for media representation on the reservation and off. We are proud to be more than a news publishing company; we are a community-driven platform with accredited journalists dedicated to amplifying Indigenous voices, preserving cultural heritage, and engaging in meaningful conversations. Our vision is to create a world where Indigenous perspectives are heard and celebrated with true meaning and Pryde. We envision a future where Indigenous stories are an integral part of the global narrative, enriching the world’s understanding of history, culture, and contemporary issues. Through our digital presence, we aim to bridge the gap between generations and connect diverse communities to inspire and make a positive change within themselves and their community.
We believe in capturing the truth and genuine experiences. Beyond Pryde covers the good and the bad of these stories in hopes to showcase the progress and struggles we as Indigenous people go through. We strive to present news and narratives that are true to the Indigenous spirit. Our content is crafted with respect and a deep understanding of the cultures and histories we reflect and represent.
Community engagement and involvement is central to our approach, recognizing the power of being within the community and involved in shaping and sharing the stories Indigenous people offer. Our platform is designed to be a space where all ages of Indigenous voices can come together, share their experiences, and engage in meaningful dialogue in hopes for a brighter future. We are dedicated to building strong, safe, and supportive communities that uplift and empower each other.
Through our captivating storytelling and news reporting, we educate and raise awareness about Indigenous issues, cultures, and contributions. The Six Nations of the
Grand River have over 12,000 on reserve community members and have over 27,000 registered band-members living off reserve. Many members have addressed the need for more information to be put on the forefront in the media and told by Indigenous peoples. We understand the cultural shifts in the world and strive to not lose sight of our own. With our dedication to sharing the languages and practices that define our traditional identities, we serve as a digital archive safeguarding these treasures for future generations.
